Conference on Infrastructure Sustainability in Hilly Regions (CISHR) 2017
Infrastructure development is an essential ingredient of any national development policy. Hilly regions in the country have always been partially supported for main stream development. The constraints on part of natural environment as well as lesser technical expertise has restricted the development activities. In the recent appearances of natural disasters including landslides, earthquake, flash floods etc. a great loss of human lives and properties was incurred. Also, with the vision for developed tomorrow many projects like strong road and railway network, housing for all etc. are being proposed.
To provide better infrastructure and sustainable resources aspects of engineering knowledge and expertise need to be explored. The advancement of ground improvement techniques can be used to improve the stability of hilly terrains while the geology of hills can be explored to define site specific solutions. Specialized approaches of analysis and design for structures with proper assessment techniques of highway or railway constructions can help to achieve the necessary growth in the region. Also, proper prediction and mitigation of natural hazards like earthquake, floods will be necessary to maintain the sustainability in the region. The lack of infrastructure facilities has compelled residents of these hills to migrate to the other parts of the country. There is an urgent need to discuss and explore the sustainable solutions for hill development keeping in mind the recent advances of technology.
