Hands-on Physics Workshop for High School Teachers from Kendriya Vidyalayas 2018

Event Description

The Centre of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education (COESME), at IISER Pune has been set up as a part of the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission for Teachers and Training under the ambit of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The objective of this center is to help impart pedagogical training to teachers as well as hands on science education to students from various schools, colleges, universities and research institutes.

Several activities are being planned and conducted as part of the COESME. These fall under three broad areas:

       1.  Pedagogical innovation by and for school/college teachers and educationists

       2.  Science Exploratorium

       3.  Science and Mathematics Educational Camps for Students

1. Pedagogical innovation by and for school/college teachers and educationists

COESME aims to organize workshops for school and college teachers to empower them to incorporate research based teaching methodologies into their daily practice. Teachers will be encouraged to develop their own teaching resources. Wherever needed, support and advice would be provided with the help of national and international experts in curriculum and pedagogy. The workshops will bring teachers together, network them and provide them an opportunity to learn pedagogical techniques from each other and refine these to make them more effective. These workshops will focus on implementing effective hands-on training and inquiry-based learning in classrooms. In addition to workshops, COESME will host a number of teacher interns at IISER Pune for more rigorous and personalized training.

One of our current projects is a Series of Pedagogy Workshops for Undergraduate Science Teachers, organised with support from the DBT/DST, Govt. of India and in collaboration with Newton Bhabha Fund, British Council.

These hands-on workshops are designed to introduce teachers of UG/PG science courses to pedagogical tools that focus on process of science rather than information, and help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The workshops give teachers a platform to network and to get information on funding opportunities. COESME plans to take this programme to all parts India at 3 levels:

  • Level 1 workshops: National workshops conducted by a team from University of Sheffield, UK along with experts from India
  • Level 2 workshops: Train-the-trainer modules for selected participants from Level 1 to enable them to train other teachers
  • Regional RBPT Workshops: Workshops for smaller, regional groups all over India, conducted by teachers trained at
  • 2. Science Exploratorium

One of the planned activities for COESME is the creation of a Science Exploratorium which would provide students with a hands-on, interactive center for learning basic scientific concepts through the use of models, scientific toys and other immersive learning approaches. The aim is to help learners internalize concepts better and to excite their imagination and creativity.

    3. Science and Mathematics Educational Camps for Students

Short residential camps are held for school and college students to acquaint them with research in different fields and to give them a feel of the research environment. In addition, promising students are provided with a platform to carry out short projects for research-based learning under the guidance of IISER faculty.

In addition, proposals to conduct programs aligned to these activities may also be considered from reputed educational/research institutions. Kindly write to us at coesme@iiserpune.ac.in
